Calcium Magnesium D

Calcium and Magnesium are essential for proper bone , teeth and muscle development. Both minerals are involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions which produce energy. Calcium and Magnesium are also necessary for muscle function, providing the mechanism for muscle contraction and relaxation including the heart muscle. Vitamin D helps the body to regulate the transport of calcium from the digestive system through the bloodstream to bone, and assists in the retention of calcium and phosphorous.

A recent study (September 2012) by Dr. Adam Tsai, a medical weight loss specialist with the University of Colorado, examined the effectiveness of weight loss counseling by medical assistants (MAs) versus primary care physicians (PCPs).

After six months, the control group (counseling by PCPs) lost just 0.9 kg +/- 0.6 kg (less than a pound). The MA counseling group lost 4.4 kg +/- 0.6 kg (about 10 lbs). According to Dr. Tsai's study, "Most primary care providers (PCPs), constrained by time and resources, cannot provide intensive behavioral counseling for obesity."

Childhood Obesity and Hearing Loss

The New York Times' Nicholas Bakalar writes of a new study in The Laryngoscope linking obesity in teenagers to hearing loss. The study was written by a team of doctors from Columbia Univesity and NYU, combining otolaryngology (ENT, or "ear, nose and throat"), pediatrics and environmental medicine.

The Obesity Epidemic

couple-beach-2-smObesity increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers. The U.S. government has labeled obesity an epidemic, and has called for a public health public approach to treating overweight and obesity. A recent NCBI report (2011) estimates the direct medical cost of overweight and obesity in the U.S. is over $113B.

Commercial vs. Clinic-Based Weight Loss Program

Dr. Adam Gilden Tsai of the University of Colorado, Denver compared results of a commercial weight loss program (Weight Watchers) with a medically-supervised clinic program. Patients in the clinic program had ten times better results (4Kg vs. .4Kg)! According to Dr. Tsai, "We think this small study suggests that a clinic-based approach might be more effective ... but we certainly need larger trials to answer that question fully."

Stephanie Sogg, PhD at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston noted, "this is a very important study because it demonstrates in a randomized clinical trial that individualized medical treatment for weight loss was superior ... to a very popular commercial program."
