Can You Really Lose Up To 20 lbs In 30 Days?

Written by

Can you really lose up to 20 lbs in a month, or is this an unrealistic marketing claim? According to Wikipedia, "[A] very low calorie diet (VLCD) is a diet with very or extremely low daily food energy consumption. [...] The VLCD is prescribed on a case to case basis for rapid weight loss (about 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms or 3 to 5 pounds per week) in people with Body Mass Index of 30 and above."

How effective are Very Low Calorie Diets?

WebMD writes, "If you have a BMI over 30 (which your doctor will call 'obese'), then a very low-calorie diet may let you lose about 3 to 5 pounds per week, for an average total weight loss of 44 pounds over 12 weeks.

"Losing that amount of weight may improve weight-related medical conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol."

What are the health benefits of a VLCD?

The NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases writes, "A VLCD may allow you to lose about 3 to 5 pounds per week. This may lead to an average total weight loss of 44 pounds over 12 weeks. Such a weight loss can rapidly improve medical conditions linked to obesity, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

"The rapid weight loss experienced by most people on a VLCD can be very motivating. Patients who participate in a VLCD program that also includes lifestyle changes may lose about 15 to 25 percent of their initial weight during the first 3 to 6 months. They may maintain a 5 percent weight loss after 4 years if they adopt a healthy eating plan and physical activity habits."

Are Very Low Calorie Diets safe?

According to WebMD, "If your BMI is greater than 30, then very low-calorie diets are generally safe when used under proper medical supervision. (Emphasis mine.) For people who are overweight but not obese (BMI of 27-30), very low-calorie diets should be reserved for those who have weight-related medical problems and are under medical supervision."

Is California Medical Weight Management a Very Low Calorie Diet?

California Medical Weight Management (www.calmwm.com) is a three-step, medically-supervised weight management system. The CalMWM system consists of three steps.

  1. Rapid weight loss (VLCD), with an individually tailored diet and weekly monitoring by our trained medical staff. Physician-prescribed medications (to control appetite), injections and supplements are dispensed at our clinics.
  2. Transition from VLCD to healthy diet based on your body's individual needs.
  3. Long-term weight maintenance with emphasis on behavioral modification, nutrition and exercise programs.

Unlike some popular diet programs, California Medical Weight Management does not sell pre-packaged foods. Diets like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers make a profit by selling you meals. There is a big difference between medically-supervised VLCDs and commercial weight loss programs!

If you are obese, or overweight and experiencing health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes or diabetes, please contact California Medical Weight Management for a free, no-obligation consultation.
