Carbohydrate Cravings

Written by

Did you know that to maintain your weight with a lower carb lifestyle it may require that you determine when they occur?

Keep in mind now, there are numerous reasons why a person may experience carb cravings (environmental influences, habit, stress, etc.) but most cravings are caused by eating too many carbs in the first place.

After a person has maintained a lower carb lifestyle awhile the cravings really do go away. However, on any given day, if too many are consumed again, the cravings can kick in again with a vengeance. Don't curse those cravings, just honestly review how you are eating. Are you simply eating too many carbs to begin with again? The more you eat them, the more you want them, especially if they are the refined ones. Some patients are simply more sensitive to carbohydrates than others. They raise insulin, and insulin can cause cravings and increase hunger.

If you are still in Step One and still losing weight and notice you are having cravings, first check to see if you are following your plan correctly. Carbs are everywhere!- even in places you might not suspect. Have your MA actually check your food diary. See if any carbs have 'crept' back into your diet plan. Or, maybe you are picking recipes with too many carbs. Your plan allows 45 grams of carbohydrates maximum, but for some that maybe too many. Get down to 35 grams (your fruit and veggies alone equal 25 grams of carbohydrates) and see if that makes a difference. It just might speed up your weight loss too! Ask your MA or provider for help if you need to review this aspect of your program.
