Cinco de Mayo - 2018

Written by
Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day from Spain. (That happened in 1810 and is celebrated on September 16th.) In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Cinco de Mayo became more identified with the Chicano rights movement in the US, especially in California. This has become more associated with a day to celebrate Hispanic heritage.
Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican victory over the French at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 (and has been celebrated on May 5th every year since then). The Mexican army, under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza, despite the army being small and not even seemingly equipped to handle the battle, surprisingly won the battle in the town of Puebla 85 miles east of Mexico City.
In numerous communities throughout the US the day is celebrated with numerous events like parades and events, authentic mariachi music and dancing, and of course all the spicy and delicious Mexican food favorites. (Enjoy some of these favorites, modified without compromising your diet.)
And it's become an American holiday too. Americans have been celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the West almost since the end of the Battle of Puebla. It was actually rather unheard of until the 1960’s when Mexican-American activists started making the day more known. And of course, it became a great way to celebrate pride in the Hispanic community.
Later in 2014, thanks to US commercialism, Cinco de Mayo became the biggest non-winter drinking day of the year. It's even one of the top five drinking holidays in general (as if anyone really needs an excuse to drink alcohol, right? As far as weight loss goes, drinking stops weight loss it fast.)
Any celebration of freedom is of course worth taking note of. Just don’t forget you are also free to make healthier choices any day of the year, especially if you are serious about attaining your health and weight loss. Just consider that when you are celebrating Cinco de Mayo on the the 5th of May on Saturday. (Here are more tips to help you get through this or any socializing event healthier.)
