Dr. Oz's Fall From Grace

Written by

Dr. Mehmet Oz is a celebrity doctor who appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show from 2004 through 2009. In 2009, The Dr. Oz Show, co-produced by Winfrey, debuted to the highest daytime TV ratings on record and won three consecutive Emmy Awards.

Dr. Oz has co-authored six New York Times bestsellers, and now manages a media empire consisting of television, radio, print magazines, and Internet. Among other honors, Oz was listed among Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" and Esquire Magazine's "75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century." He is sometimes referred to as "America's Doctor."

In 2014 Dr. Oz came under fire from Congress, led by Senator Claire McCaskill, chairwoman of the Consumer Protection Panel, for making exaggerated claims about weight loss supplements by touting "miracle-in-a-bottle" weight loss supplements.

  • Green coffee extract: "You may think magic is make-believe, but this little bean has scientists saying they've found the magic weight loss cure for every body type."
  • Raspberry ketone: "I've got the number one miracle in a bottle to burn your fat."
  • Garcinia cambogia: "No exercise, no diet, no effort."

Before Congress, Dr. Oz admitted using "flowery language" to describe the benefits of certain supplements, but claimed he did not endorse any specific product or receive money from sales or advertising of weight loss supplements. In a prepared statement after the hearing, Oz said that, "To not have the conversation about supplements at all however would be a disservice to the viewer. In addition to exercising an abundance of caution in discussing promising research and products in the future, I look forward to working with all those present today in finding a way to deal with the problems of weight loss scams."

At California Medical Weight Management, we know how hard it can be to lose weight. Unfortunately the work of charismatic charlatans like Dr. Oz makes that task even more difficult and discouraging. But remember, obesity is a preventable disease. Here are some simple steps you can take that will really transform your life.

  • If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight.
  • Step away from the computer, TV or video game and take a walk, or ride a bike.
  • Avoid fast food restaurants. Eat regular, nutritious, home-cooked meals. Know what goes into your food.
  • Avoid sweets and sodas, including diet sodas (which have been shown to increase appetite).
  • Get enough rest. Your body uses sleep time to regulate and heal.
  • Set a good example for your kids, because they copy you. Avoid fat-shaming which increases anxiety and can trigger overeating.

Have a happy and healthy 2015!
