Good News From Latest JAMA Study

Written by

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that obesity rates among young children (ages 2-5) decreased 43% since the last survey in 2004. This is more good news following the announcement that obesity rates dropped among low-income preschool children. Addressing childhood obesity is important because we have learned that obesity problems start sooner than we realized: a NEJM study showed overweight five-year-olds are four times as likely to become obese.

Although the gains against childhood obesity are encouraging, the JAMA study was not all good news. Obesity rates in women over 60 rose significantly. Other obesity rates (children and adults) remained the same: 1/3 of Americans are still overweight and 1/3 are obese.

In 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama, wife of President Barack Obama, began a national program called "Let's Move!" to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation. Mrs. Obama has worked tirelessly for the cause of fighting childhood obesity. To learn more about Let's Move!, visit www.letsmove.gov.
