Motivation to Stay on Track

It's no surprise that December is the most challenging time of the year to stay on track with healthy eating or dieting. The closer we get to the big day, the more stressful it seems to get. There are numerous techniques you can implement to keep you going strong if you just take a few minutes to reflect on your goals in some way.

Try to plan daily or weekly non-food rewards for yourself when adhering to your health goals through December. I know a lot of you say you reward yourself already. Well, save those rewards ONLY for when you have succeeded with your challenges for the week, whether they be socializing at a party, shopping, baking, or just resisting any temptation! Stick to your commitment on this. Make a pack with someone who you can be accountable with it if you have to. (Support at this time of year is also beneficial!)

Ideas for rewards:

  • Plan some time alone just to do something pleasurable for you.
  • Get a massage, even if it's just a 15 minute back rub at the mall or allow yourself to have a longer pedicure instead of an 'express' version.
  • Buy yourself your favorite CD, perfume, etc.
  • Buy yourself a ticket for a favorite event.

Most importantly verbally acknowledge to yourself what you are doing things right rather than focusing on any mistakes. Learn from any slips and have a plan in mind for the next time a similar situation occurs. Positive reinforcement WORKS, so do it often, especially at this more challenging time of year!
