Motivation – After a Slip

How are you all doing now that we are well into January? It's usually a good month for following a diet. However after a few weeks or so, the "newness" of a diet or resolution wears off and the reality of all the hard work you need to do starts to make you weary. You may start to have slips in your plan. Then you may get discouraged and might even quit.

Quitter's Week

Here we are past the middle of January. If you started your official "diet" for your New Year's Resolution around the 1st of the year you have successfully gotten through the traditional "Quitter's Week!" But dieter beware, it can still strike at any given time.

What happens is the reality of all the hard work involved to lose weight becomes real. The newness of the weight loss plan loses its luster. But don't allow that to happen. It you are really serious about losing your weight once and for all, all you need is to be persistent with your commitment. You need to remind yourself of those hard core reasons of exactly why you want to lose your weight. (Review last week's blog to strengthen your motivation.)

"Trying" should not even be a word allowed in your vocabulary when it comes to losing your weight."Trying" is not doing. "Trying" is a word made for an escape hatch. So put the emphasis on "action" and "doing" what it takes, regardless of the challenges. Success is connected to the specific actions, that doing part. Just keep going no matter what. Mistakes will happen, it's part of the process but that's how you learn.

Earn the special title to be one of the few who succeeded while others have long given up. Your dedication to your goals means you faced the challenges and it took patience to persevere. Those who failed were those who gave up easily or didn't even make the effort.

The other day I promised I'd discuss ways to tap deeply into your motivation. At the beginning of the year it is easier to be motivated to lose weight after a month of overindulging. But the harsh reality is, later the newness of a diet wears off. Motivation is a feeling, it will come and go. It's up to you to stoke the fire of momentum and keep it glowing.
