Support for Dieting During the Holidays

Written by
Sometimes when you are in the process of losing weight you might feel as though you are really alone in the process, especially during the holiday season when most people completely abandon healthy eating in general.
This is when losing weight can be hard and lonely work. Or what if your loved ones just aren't supportive as you'd like them to be? Only another person going through the same experience can really understand what it really feels like. The good news is that you really can put together an effective support system that will work for you when all the holiday favorites are sitting in your face and taunting you relentlessly!
But, you have to do your homework and explore your options to find out what will truly work for you. One idea is to find like-minded people who share your similar interests. You may not click with everyone you meet, but in time you can find at least one or two people who can be the foundation for a new support system and  who can help keep your goals a priority. The idea behind all this is that it’s a lot easier to reach a goal if you have ongoing support, regardless of the time of year. Statistics prove that people are much more successful when they have help and accountability. You can find this support by connecting with people with similar goals. Here are some ways to explore support systems:
  • Join a gym or YMCA. Find others who are losing weight. Participate in different classes and you will find people who have similar interests and goals.
  • Take cooking classes that are about making healthy choices. the people there will probably have the same concerns about their health as you do.
  • With social media being so popular, use it to get to your goals! You can check in regularly with a supportive friend or family member. Set a weekly date with specific goals to help you stay on track, especially this month. You might even want to have contact on a daily basis. Studies even confirm that social media can support weight loss goals.
  • Keep your weekly appointments at your clinic, no matter how you do every week! Remember we are here to support you regardless of how good, or not so good, you do on your plan!
  • At the very least, really learn to communicate your needs with those you are the closest to. Explain your feelings about being overweight rather than just saying, "I'm on a diet."  Relating how you feel tell the real story about what you need and want from a person, especially when you are specific about what those needs are.

"Sometimes we just need someone to be there for us. Not just to fix anything, or even do anything in particular. Simply so that we can feel supported and cared about during the harder times."
