FDA Approves New Treatment for Diabetes

Written by

FDA last Friday approved a new form of anti- diabetes medicine insulin that can be taken as inhalation. The medicine (brand name Afrezza) is expected to help patients affected by diabetes control their blood sugar levels. It is claimed to be a fast-acting form of insulin. Given that insulin could only be given through injections, an easy form of the medicine was long awaited.

About diabetes, it is a group of diseases in which the blood sugar level is higher than the normal because the sugar controlling mechanism of our body is disrupted and no more capable of keeping the sugar level at a desirable level. What makes sugar (or glucose) control so important for our body is the fact that sugar is the energy fuel that each and every cell of our body needs it for its survival and normal functioning; if our body continues facing an imbalance in sugar level for quite a while, it can land us with multiple health problems.

Obesity is one of the biggest risk factors for type 2 diabetes which is the most common form of diabetes. So it is no surprise that number of diabetic patients is increasing alarmingly, in line with rising incidence of obesity.
According to the latest National Diabetes Statistics released June this year:

  • 29.1 million Americans, (9.3% of the population) were found diabetic in 2012 while the figures were 25.8 million (8.3% of population) in 2010, clearly indicating a big rise in the cases of diabetes.
  • Talking in terms of mortality claimed by diabetes, the disease remained 7th leading cause of death in the US. In year 2010, death certificates of 69,071 people listed diabetes as the underlying cause of death while a total of 234,051 death certificates indicated diabetes as an the underlying or contributory cause of death.

Clearly, we cannot hope to bring down this morbidity and mortality caused by diabetes unless we are ready to address the basic issue of obesity.

Please note that Afrezza is a prescription medicine and should be used only when prescribed by a health care provider. The purpose of this writing is just to provide general information about the medicine and it should not be taken as medical advice or an endorsement in any way. Please consult your doctor to know more about it.
