"Healthy Obese"

Written by

Have you heard of the term  "healthy obese?"

It's become a term used to describe obese people who don't have metabolic problems such as high cholesterol, poor blood sugar control, diabetes, or high blood pressure.

According to the European Congress on Obesity, May 2017, just because people do not have metabolic problems, after reviewing an analysis of the health records of 3.5 million people, they certainly have other health problems. A study spearheaded by author Dr. Rishi Caleyachetty revealed that compared to normal weight people with no metabolic problems, healthy obese individuals have a 50% higher risk of heart disease, a 7% higher risk of stroke, have double the risk of heart failure, and a greater risk of peripheral artery disease. This doctor tells it like it is, "The priority of health professionals should be to promote and facilitate weight loss among obese persons, regardless of the presence or absence of metabolic abnormalities." Registered Dieticians and Certified Nutritionists should be given a much bigger role in health care, specifically with lifestyle and health education on a consistent basis instead of pouring money into so much medication. Solve the real problems rather than just putting a band-aid on them.

All too often being overweight  is just the beginning. I would certainly add to all this is that even if a person shows no problems when he or she is fairly young, when unhealthy eating/lifestyle habits continue (whether heavy or thin) health issues will, and do occur later. It's amazing to me how often people don’t even make the connection of how their weight may be an underlying problem to the health issue that may occur. Health problems are often interrelated but not always in an obvious way. It seems the focus should be more on health rather than just the weight.

“It’s not a short term diet, it’s a long term lifestyle.”
