May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. At CMWM we always encourage ongoing physical activity- and not just for weight loss and maintenance, but for real health benefits!
Consistent physical activity is good for everyone’s health, and people of all ages and body types can be physically active. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great time to spread the word about all the benefits of getting active. Here are just a few benefits of physical activity:
  1. Prevents numerous diseases, especially diabetes, heart disease, and cancer
  2. Boosts energy
  3. Strengthens bones and muscles
  4. Counteracts stress
  5. Improves mental health, even mild depression
  6. Improves sleep
  7. Improves your sex life 
  8. Supports your weight loss and do note, helps you maintain weight loss later
Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for everyone to get more physical activity. Make a difference. First and foremost be an example and role model for everyone (and especially your own children). Make it a point to move yourself if you aren't already. Then spread the word about enjoyable ways to get moving!
How can National Physical Fitness and Sports Month make a difference? This month especially, make a point to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity. Here are just a few ideas:
  • Encourage families to make small changes, like taking a walk after dinner or going for a bike ride.
  • Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of every student’s day.
  • Identify youth leaders in the community who can talk to their peers about the importance of being active.
