National Senior Health and Fitness Day 2017

Did you know that 100,000 older adults will participate in activities at more than 1,000 locations throughout the U.S. as seniors celebrate the 24th Annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 31st?
Many communities  will offer specific events for Senior Health and Fitness Day. All seniors are encouraged to attend for health screenings along with diet and exercise information sessions.
So whether you are called Grandma, Granny, Gramps, or Papa, it doesn't matter, any time is a good time to start moving but it's especially important for seniors. Healthy habits like regular exercise and eating right support seniors for ongoing health and illness prevention. A healthy diet can keep a senior (like anyone else) stay off many medications, boost immunity, and gain energy. Exercise helps build muscle and bone mass and lowers the risk of fractures and helps increase strength and flexibility so important as adults  grow older.
The problem is older people just simply give up on exercise. Many assume they are just too out of shape, too sick, too tired or just too old. This is just plain wrong. These are the very reasons why you SHOULD exercise! Exercise can actually eliminate many of these problems regardless of your age!
Some may say decline in old age is simply inevitable. This doesn't have to be true! Many people in their 70's and 80's, and even older are still running and even becoming body-builders, although this does not have to be the goal. In fact did you know that many of the symptoms associated with old age like weakness and loss of balance are actually more related to simple inactivity and unhealthy eating, NOT aging? 
So no matter how old you are, just get moving, make it a goal to eat healthier and participate in Senior Health and Fitness Day to see how you can remain healthy and be young in mind and spirit.
