Peppermint to Control Cravings?

Written by

I actually happen to enjoy aromatherapy but it just may have a good effect on your appetite as well. Specific scents have already been validated to soothe stress (lavender for example).... Would it be possible that specific scents could impact your dieting efforts in a positive way? Peppermint in particular seems to work effectively to help with hunger and even cravings, a dieter's worst enemy.

According to Bryan Raudenbush, a professor at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, peppermint helped dieters. His actual research "showed that volunteers who sniffed peppermint scent every two hours were not as hungry as non-sniffers and — even better — they ate 2,800 fewer calories in a week. That's getting close enough to lose close to a pound!" What a pleasant way to lose weight! The study also concluded "another implication would be that peppermint scent could be used to curb individuals' false hunger cravings, i.e. emotional eating."

Peppermint also supports exercise. Raudenbush's earlier studies showed that athletes even perform better using peppermint. "They were able to go longer at the gym, able to push themselves, were more motivated, less fatigued and felt like they had more energy."

So if you do decide to try this to control cravings or even to get more focused while exercising, remember you need to use real peppermint oil. It is different than just a scent or fragrance. You would want to use real PEO for this purpose. A pure essential oil (PEO) is present in tiny droplets or sacs derived directly from a real plant source. Typical fragrances and perfumes are usually man-made synthetic scents and the body does not respond in the same way. (The Environmental Working Group states it best: "A rose may be a rose. But that rose-like fragrance in your perfume may be something else entirely, concocted from any number of the fragrance industry's 3,100 stock chemical ingredients, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer.") You can find PEO's at almost any reputable health food store. Put a few drops on some Kleenex tissue, keep it with you throughout out the day and take a few long sniffs of it every few hours.

So besides taste, the olfactory sense is something you can freely indulge in without gaining weight! Give PEO's a try. Besides what have you got lose (no pun intended)!
