Addicted to Food?

Some clients say to me "I'm addicted" to food. Science is actually indicating that specific foods do affect the brain similar to actual  "drugs." What happens is that these foods activate the pleasure center of the brain, producing dopamine, and once we taste those foods, guess, what, we want more of course! Blood sugar disturbances can also occur and these cause similar problems. Here are just a few of the most addicting foods:

Mother's Day 2018

Mother's Day is Sunday May 13th. What special things do you have planned for her that won't sabatage her weight loss efforts? Here are some ideas to explore:

  • Perfume, jewelry, fresh flowers are always good, especially if they are her special favorites.
  • Give her a special subscription to a healthy cooking magazine, a low-carb cookbook, (CMWM has one of course) or even a healthy cooking class or two?
  • How about a trial membership to a local health club – or even just give mom the time to go work out or walk everyday. There's always special home exercise equipment that are available too.
  • Give mom a special yoga DVD with a stress reduction section (CMWM just happens to have one of those too!)
  • If you really have to spoil her with some food related choices at least consider some Chocolate Delites from the CMWM program.
  • Try some of our CMWM recipes designed specifically for special occasions. How about a low carb Asparagus Quiche special breakfast served on a tray with some fresh flowers?
  • Numerous stores carry bath salts and special aromatherapy items that are guaranteed to relax her mind, body and spirit. What mom doesnt need some down time?
  • If she really wants to go out, do NOT make it a buffet as that can be just too overwhelming. Pick a place that has tasty healthy options with moderate serving sizes. Then take her for a special romantic walk that she will enjoy, to work off any extra calories.

And, we have to have a little tribute to Mom too here:

"A mother is like a ray of sunshine
Whose heart is just pure gold.
A mother beams with happiness
That'll never grow old.
She'll stay in my heart forever
As if she were inside
We've shared so many things,
We laughed, we smiled, we cried.
I love my mother very much
and still throughout the years
We share the mother-daughter (son) love,
and always when I fear,
I know I'll always have my mother
Somewhere very near!"  -Anonymous

Cinco de Mayo - 2018

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day from Spain. (That happened in 1810 and is celebrated on September 16th.) In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Cinco de Mayo became more identified with the Chicano rights movement in the US, especially in California. This has become more associated with a day to celebrate Hispanic heritage.
Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican victory over the French at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 (and has been celebrated on May 5th every year since then). The Mexican army, under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza, despite the army being small and not even seemingly equipped to handle the battle, surprisingly won the battle in the town of Puebla 85 miles east of Mexico City.
In numerous communities throughout the US the day is celebrated with numerous events like parades and events, authentic mariachi music and dancing, and of course all the spicy and delicious Mexican food favorites. (Enjoy some of these favorites, modified without compromising your diet.)
And it's become an American holiday too. Americans have been celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the West almost since the end of the Battle of Puebla. It was actually rather unheard of until the 1960’s when Mexican-American activists started making the day more known. And of course, it became a great way to celebrate pride in the Hispanic community.
Later in 2014, thanks to US commercialism, Cinco de Mayo became the biggest non-winter drinking day of the year. It's even one of the top five drinking holidays in general (as if anyone really needs an excuse to drink alcohol, right? As far as weight loss goes, drinking stops weight loss it fast.)
Any celebration of freedom is of course worth taking note of. Just don’t forget you are also free to make healthier choices any day of the year, especially if you are serious about attaining your health and weight loss. Just consider that when you are celebrating Cinco de Mayo on the the 5th of May on Saturday. (Here are more tips to help you get through this or any socializing event healthier.)

A Move for More Movement

The other day I discussed how sitting is the new smoking, meaning that leading a sedentary lifestyle has serious consequences in terms of life expectancy and aging more quickly. And now there's even more bad news.

Sitting is the New Smoking

Remember when smoking was considered one of the worst things you could for your health? It's still bad of course, but now researchers have found another equally as bad health hazard.
