What's In That Hot Dog?

Estimates for American hot dog consumption are roughly 150 million or more for a Fourth of July holiday. If you were to line up that many franks it would literally would stretch from sea to shining sea — several times.

Happy Father's Day 2014

You all want to celebrate dad the best you can in the way we all know too well – socializing around family, food and fun. Just do it in a healthy way. Don't allow it to be simply another excuse not to follow a healthy eating plan.

Happy Spring - New Beginnings

A few weeks ago the season of spring started. It's that time of year that symbolically represents a "rebirth" or new beginning of some kind. Maybe some of you still need to get to that New Year's resolution going you started back in January. Maybe some of you slipped off the program and need to resume again. Or, maybe you have just decided to do something healthier for your yourself. This new beginning is what the traditional Easter Egg originally represented oddly enough....sorry I'm still not sure what the bunny had to do with all this though!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

St. Patrick's Day isn't really until next Monday but many of you might be celebrating on different days. Here are some thoughts that will hopefully help moderate your calorie expenditure if you are celebrating, especially with alcohol. Ask yourself will the night of fun be worth the calories?

Think of this: A 12 ounce beer or mug typically has about 150 calories (bigger mugs will have more calories of course). Most men might typically drink six or more beers throughout the evening. Ladies may drink less. That equals about 900 calories of empty calories. Let's do some math with the calories and activity.

  • If you weigh 130 pounds you will have to walk moderately for about 4.35 hours to burn the extra 900 calories.
  • At 150 pounds you will have to walk 3.65 hours to burn the 900 calories.
  • At 190 pounds you will have to walk 3 hours to burn the additional 900 calories.

This all translates into a lot of exercise and calorie cutting and it isn't even considering any other extra calories you may have consumed in your celebration. You might want to consider the mantra of moderation. And that's not blarney!

Even if you aren't drinking beer keep in mind all alcohol is heavy in calories. A half glass of wine, 5 little ounces, has about 110 calories. Hard liquor is usually about 110 calories for 1 1/2 ounces.

So my advice if you want to drink, at least drink in moderation but be prepared for any consequences and ask yourself if it will really be worth it on the scale the next week.

Planning for Holidays and Special Days

When I plan menus I tend to think of things like what is seasonally available and what is at its peak ripeness. I'll couple that with what occasions are being celebrated and compose from there. On Presidents Day I may think of making something to do with cherries (President Washington chopping Dow the cherry tree...) or something Irish on St. Patrick's Day, etc. as I would suspect anyone does. But, for those on the CMWM diet program, that can sometimes be a challenge as we need to stay within plan if we wish to reach and maintain our goals in health and weight management.
