Why are You Struggling to Lose Weight?

Do you want to lose weight on one level but are you emotionally resisting the process because of some kind of hidden payoff? In other words, what kind of specific benefits do you recieve by not losing weight? What possible motive could you have for staying overweight and being unhealthy?
One common payoff is that a person simply doesn’t want to give up favorite foods or certain socializing rituals with friends to lose the weight. After all, that all seems fun and entertaining right? Maybe a person enjoys that afternoon run to the vending machine or break room where the stash of goodies are. Is it possible that it be simple boredom or a need for some social interaction, or just simply a need for a real break from work? Maybe an individual wants a few glasses of wine in the evening to unwind from the day's hectic pace.
Then sometimes a payoff relates to dealing with deeper emotions and food. Maybe the food gives a person a way to reward himself after a stressful challenging day with the kids or a demanding boss. Maybe the food relieves anxiety about a current or upcoming situation. Is it just a way to calm down or even a welcomed diversion from life's daily and ongoing challenges? Do you see the unmet needs in any of the above circumstances?
Frequently this whole concept goes much deeper and you might have to dig for your own personal payoff(s). For example, a woman who has been raped or molested keeps her weight on as a form of protection, which is her payoff for holding onto the excess weight. Being unattractive usually keeps the opposite sex away.
If you have tried numerous times to lose weight and failed just too many times, maybe it's time to dive into this process a little. I've always maintained that losing weight really isn't always about the food consumed, it's about the emotional needs that are not met in some way.
You might question: “What payoff are you getting for remaining stuck at this point of your expansion?” -Julia Cameron  Or, just ask yourself, what do I NEED that I am not getting? How can I get this need met appropriately?
