Willpower at Parties

Written by

The holiday events are ramping up. How to you stick with moderation with so much temptation all the time?

It's easy to say, "I'll just have a small bite." But the reality is sometimes one little bite becomes excessive eating. If you are really practicing moderation or working on rigorous weight loss here's a few small tricks to keep you on track.

If you are at a party or restaurant you have to remain focused and vigilant, so the very minute you become aware of your willpower weakening imagine a red glaring Stop! sign (ask for the handout by that name at your clinic). and head straight to the ladies room. Once in there, if you are by alone give yourself a verbal pep talk in front of the mirror. One question you can ask yourself is, "Is it really that important to gratify a momentary impulse with excessive food, or is more important to moderate my eating and be happy? What's really more important to me?" Take a moment to really think about the consequences of your actions and how they might impede your progress. (You may even want to keep a list of your personal motivators with you to review for these times. Remember they have to be really inspiring heart-felt motivators so they can keep you going in the right direction!)

I also suggest you get into the daily habit of checking in with yourself and what is motivating you as part of your normal thinking pattern so it's quickly available in those more tempting times when you need it the most. This is literally something you can do without  costing you anything but a little time and little effort once the habit is established.

You can also use quotes as motivators. They can be just as effective when you need them. One of my favorites is, "There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them." - Dr. Denis Waitley
