Choosing The Right Equipment

The best piece of equipment is the one you’re most likely to use regularly. Here are some tips to help you figure out what that is, plus other factors to take into consideration.

  • Determine your budget.
  • Try before you buy. Go to a large, reputable sporting goods store and try out as many machines as you can that fit within your budget: stair stepper, treadmill, elliptical trainer, rowing machine, etc. If a friend has equipment, ask to try it out.
  • Seek advice from a knowledgeable person—store employee, personal trainer—and be sure to tell them if you have physical limitations such as poor balance or bad knees. Take these limitations into serious consideration when you are deciding what equipment to buy.
  • A treadmill burns the most calories of the common cardiovascular machines.
  • Elliptical machines and stair steppers are easy on the joints and burn a lot of calories.
  • A stationary bike places the least stress on the joints but burns fewer calories.
  • A rowing machine works a lot of muscle groups but can be uncomfortable and difficult for beginners.
  • Choose a machine that feels right.
  • Purchase the highest quality equipment that you can afford.
